The Best Athens Hotel, A Revisit to the Hotel Grand Bretagne

Still one of the Best Experiences despite a hiccup

The Bane known as DCC

Stayed October 2016
Written June 2017

Ouzo!

After leaving Dubrovik and the delightful Hilton, my next destination would be Bucharest in Romania via Athens. I had a night to spend in Athens and I was thinking of the Sofitel at the airport, the nearby Holiday Inn or back to my favourite Hotel Grand Bretagne in central Athens.

After much deliberation, I decided to go to back to the GB (my previous sterile review is here) as I did not want to waste time around the airport. Similar to my previous stay, I received an email prior to my stay and gave some feedback on my last visit.

The hotel is the usual place for interviews of celebrities and politicians in Athens as the Parliament House is in one view and the Acropolis in the opposite view.

Hotel Grande Bretagne, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens, Greece - August 2014

Hotel Bretagne is widely deemed as the hotel to stay in Athens.

It even has its own wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Grande_Bretagne

It is the hotel of choice for celebrities and politicians staying in Athens.

Unfortunately, there were no VIPs during our stay. That may actually be a good thing because the security is less stringent and access to the hotel is less troublesome.

Why choose this hotel?

The history of the hotel makes this a minor attraction.

The central location just in front of Syntagma Square and Parliament House is excellent. One can watch the Changing of the Guard from the hotel.

The Syntagma Square Metro station has an exit just beside the hotel.

The King George in the previous review is next to the Grand Bretagne.

Service is very good here and the rooftop restaurant is excellent.

The Management

Starwood, the same with King George.

Getting to the Hotel

City centre hotels have a flat taxi fee of 35 Euros in the day from the airport.

Or one could take the metro.

The Hotel

The classic feel of the building greets you from afar and the details to the facade cannot be ignored.

The door-person will greet you and get you onto taxis which are almost always available at the doorstep!

A taxi would stop for you if you stand just outside the hotel (Even if we were just waiting to cross the road...)

However, it must be hot in that uniform.

The lobby is high and grand, with golden yellow as a dominant colour.

The columns are a particularly nice touch.

There is also a restaurant extended from the lobby

A small business centre and gift shop is located at the elevators.

The hotel is rather small actually, but still opulent in the colours and decorations.

The staircases show this very well

The elevator seems a bit out of place, perhaps it was built later into the building.

A cupboard showing the history of the hotel.

The corridors are brightly lit and rather wide for the small hotel.

The Rooms

We were in a Junior Suite which is about twice as big as the basic room. Yet the room (suite) is still small!

The toilet is, on the other hand, big enough to fit in a bathtub and a standing shower.

The amenities were fine but I didn't find anything great about it.

The room faces the internal side and hence there's not much view.

The Food and Drinks

The rooftop restaurant is one of must-visits in Athens.

The hotel is one of the tallest building in central Athens and offers good views of the Parliament House and Acropolis. The view is definitely superior to the Tudor Hall in King George.

A panorama shows the great view much better!

The breakfast is excellent for the quality and very good for range. It is one of the best in terms of quality for a hotel in a city.

The Pool

There is an outdoor pool and an indoor pool.

The indoor pool is at the spa and is rather dark and noisy. It looks much better in a poster.

The outdoor pool is much better but is also very crowded. However, the view of Mount Lycabettus is delightful!

The Gym

A small gym at the spa gives basic fitness opportunity.

 The Spa

The hotel spa accommodates the fitness centre, indoor pool as well as a beautiful lounging area.

Some refreshments are available without additional charges.

The spa is a very busy one and there was no same-day availability for treatments.

The Service

Prior to arrival, I received a welcoming email and the arrangement for some amenities for my birthday.
I declined the alcohol offering and was informed that alternative amenities would be offered.

Unfortunately, that did not happen but I do think it is a privilege if the hotel went above and beyond.

The hotel provides butler service and check-in to the junior suite was done at a separate reception.

The staff were very polite and spoke good English.

The in-charge Ms Delphina (hope I got the spelling of her name correct) was very meticulous and tried her best for dinner recommendation and arrangement.

I was offered champagne during which she insisted I must have for my birthday.

Even the paper towels are printed with the hotel's logo.

Turn-down service came with a piece of chocolate.

In Summary

This is indeed an opulent hotel to stay in, with a great location and staff.

One may even meet celebrities here!

I do think it is worthwhile to pay a little more for the KG or the GB, given the great location.

King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens, Greece - August 2014

Ever since I saw a picture of the Parthenon in Athens as a child in my Collier's Encyclopedia (which became Microsoft's Encarta), I had always wanted to visit it.

It was definitely a dream come true when I gazed upon the Acropolis.

Why choose this hotel?

The KG is a luxury hotel right at the centre of Athens, next to Syntagma Square.

I suspect it is under the owner of the Grand Bretagne (next review) under the same owner as the entry on my credit card states the charge as 'Grand Bretagne'

Most of the attractions are within walking distance or less than a 5 Euro taxi ride away.

The Management

Starwood!

Getting to the Hotel

Being at the city centre, one can take the taxi from the airport which is currently set at a flat fee of 35 Euros in the day.

Otherwise the Syntagma Square Station is right in front with an exit next to the GB.

The Hotel

The decor is classical and uncluttered. The hotel is very brightly lit and white seems to be the predominant colour.

The GB is right next to it.

The main doors to the hotel are really big and heavy. Thankfully one gets help most of the time.

"Help" is usually dressed in a uniform.

The front desk is right after the doors.

The lobby has many art pieces and is very spacious with a lot of seating.

The picture at the top of this post shows part of the lobby.

The atmosphere was so calm that I spent an hour here just relaxing.

Big, simple but elegant stairs link the various floors.

Or one could take the elevator.

The corridors are a little too narrow in my opinion.

The Rooms

We were in a deluxe room with Acropolis View.

The room is rather minimally furnished, congruent to the overall feel of the hotel.

The mini bar is located at the entrance.

The bathroom was in contrast a little over the top with the marble tiles but I have no complaints over the size.

The amenities were great and I really love the shampoo!

This room is actually quite big compared to the basic rooms.

Named as a room with Acropolis View, one does see the Acropolis but not too extraordinary.

The Parliament House and Syntagma Square are clearly visible from the room.

The Food and Drinks

The Tudor Hall is the restaurant at the KG, and breakfast is served here as well.

The view is quite good and is similar to the room, but is definitely better due to the higher elevation.

The range for breakfast is only satisfactory but the quality is good. However, this pales in comparison to the GB next door.

Reservations for dinner at the rooftop restaurant at GB are hard to get and the Tudor Hall is an acceptable alternative.

At the restaurant in the evening, one can watch the Acropolis light up in 2 stages.

The Pool  And The Gym

There is no swimming pool at the KG for guests, unless you are in the penthouse (presidential) suite.

However, you are allowed to use the ones at GB which are actually very beautiful.

The gym is small and very basic.

The Spa

No Spa here either. Located at GB as well.

The Service

The staff seems a little new and stiff during check-in. I would think a luxury hotel should do better. Otherwise, there was not much of interaction and I would give the service here just a "Good" rating.

In Summary

This is definitely a luxury hotel, but at similar room rates, I would prefer the GB next door.
Service needs to improve and the lack of facilities, which are located in GB, is a significant disadvantage.

Room size is an advantage over the GB.
